DIEHARD CIGARETTE LIGHTER - a study in minimizing

“Giving up smoking is the easiest thing in the world. I know because I’ve done it thousands of times. ” wrote Mark Twain. Die Hard is a gallery piece designed by Pip Tompkin. The piece captures Pip Tompkin’s passion for reducing, simplifying and minimizing products. When the product reduction is taken to an extreme, the resulting elements define a new product. In the case of the Die Hard, the original object to go through the minimization process was an automobile, which was stripped down to become a cigarette lighter. The final components are a car cigarette lighter, a set of jumper cables and a car battery. These three components are housed in an 80cm high welded polycarbonate box. The final twist to the piece is the use of the Sears brand DieHard battery, reminding smokers of the possible consequences of their habit. The DieHard is available on special order.
